Raw honey, 3kg in two 1.5kg tubs

Three kilos of raw honey is a lot of honey, and that’s the point. R600 for the pair, so R200 a kilo. Cheapest we sell honey by weight. If a jar lasts about a fortnight in your house, this is the size to buy.

Same honey as our smaller sizes, just more of it. Raw and unheated, from South African hives, strained but not filtered clear. It’ll crystallise, sometimes inside a month, sometimes after three, because that’s what honey does when nobody has cooked it. Stand the tub in warm water and it loosens again.

Who actually gets through 3kg

Big households, mainly. Five people, a couple of tea drinkers and someone who bakes on a Sunday will see the bottom of the second tub in a few months. It works for anyone baking in volume too, where 500g jars turn into an admin job. And plenty of people buy this size to split with family: two of you pay R300 each for 1.5kg, which is R20 under what a single 1.5kg tub costs on its own. Nobody’s getting rich off that R20. It’s still the better buy.

Keeping the second tub sealed

Leave it shut until the first one’s empty. Unopened raw honey keeps for years, so there’s nothing to gain by cracking both, and no reason to decant it into smaller jars. A cupboard is fine. But keep it off a sunny windowsill, and out of the cupboard directly above the stove, because warming and cooling over and over speeds up the crystallising.

Water’s the thing to watch. Honey pulls moisture out of the air, so use a dry spoon, and wipe the rim before you press the lid back down. In a Durban February that matters more than it does on the Highveld.

If you’re not certain you’ll finish 3kg, buy the 1.5kg tub first and see how long it lasts you. But of the two mistakes, buying too much is the cheaper one. The second tub sits sealed and keeps, while running out in July means paying more per kilo to replace it.
