
If you’ve been searching for silajeet in South Africa and finding very little, the spelling is why. Silajeet, shilajeet, salajit, shilajit and mumijo all describe the same material, and which one you type mostly depends on who told you about it in the first place.
None of them is wrong. But sellers overwhelmingly use one, so the rest return thin results, and that gap is worth understanding before you buy.
The word comes from Sanskrit, and every version in English is a transliteration, which means somebody heard a sound and wrote down their closest guess at it in Latin letters. So there’s no original English spelling to be correct about.
Two things follow.
First, if you search one spelling and browse only those results, you’re seeing a fraction of the market. The other spellings turn up sellers and prices the first search never shows you.
Second, and more usefully, a seller who uses several spellings on their own site is usually one who understands the material rather than one who picked a trending product. It’s a small signal, but it’s a signal.
The spelling tells you nothing about quality. Nothing at all. A jar labelled silajeet isn’t more authentic than one labelled shilajit, and an unusual spelling doesn’t make the resin any more likely to have been sourced the traditional way. Anyone implying otherwise is selling you a story.
What separates one jar from another is whether it’s been purified properly and whether anybody has tested it. That’s a laboratory question, not a linguistic one.
A mineral-rich resin that seeps from rock seams at altitude over centuries, as plant matter compresses between the layers. It’s scraped off the rock, then purified and filtered, and sold as a soft black resin. Nothing is manufactured and nothing is added.
Because it comes out of rock, the raw material carries whatever the rock carries, heavy metals included. Purification is meant to take them out, and a laboratory test is the only way to confirm it did. That’s true of silajeet, shilajeet, salajit and shilajit equally.
