
The question lands in our inbox most weeks, usually word for word: how long does shilajit take to work? We’ve never given anyone a number, and we’re not going to start. Nobody selling this stuff has an honest one. Us included.
What does exist is a thin shelf of clinical trials, and their lengths are the only real anchors you have. They ran from 28 days to 48 weeks. Five trials, five different groups of people. And not one of them measured the thing you probably mean when you say “working”.
Shortest to longest, here’s the honest spread. We list the populations next to the results because the population is the part that quietly disappears in most supplement marketing.

That tells you almost nothing about your own next fortnight. The shortest study, Yadav’s 28-day pilot, was open-label, ran with 25 healthy young men and no placebo group, and the testosterone reading in that group came back flat. We keep it on the list because it’s inconvenient for us and true.
The caveats matter more than the headline percentages. Most of the positive trials used PrimaVie, a standardised extract in capsule form, rather than raw resin off a spoon. Sample sizes run from 25 to 75 people. Some of the work was paid for by manufacturers. The evidence base for shilajit is small and young, and any brand telling you otherwise hasn’t read it.
Pingali’s 48-week study tracked bone mineral density in 60 postmenopausal women with osteopenia. Bone density isn’t a feeling. Every one of those women could have gone a full year noticing nothing whatsoever in her body, and the measured result would still have been the measured result.
Keller’s 8-week trial in 63 active men looked at how much strength the men held onto during a fatiguing session, plus a blood marker of collagen breakdown in a subgroup. Pandit’s 90-day trial in 75 healthy men aged 45 to 55 measured hormone levels in a lab against placebo. Biswas counted sperm in 28 subfertile men over 90 days.
None of that is “I felt sharper by Thursday”. Blood markers and scans move on their own schedule, often without the person carrying them around feeling a thing. So when a brand promises you’ll notice something by day seven, they aren’t quoting research, because the research never asked that question.
“Feel the difference in 10 days.” “Most people notice by week two.” Those sentences come from copywriters, not researchers, and they get written because a deadline sells better than a shrug. No trial reports a day of onset. There’s no sane way to produce one either, across different doses, different forms and products that vary wildly in what they actually contain.
That last bit is the part people skip. Every timing question assumes the jar in your hand holds what the label says it does. Kamgar 2025, in BMC Chemistry, analysed six commercial shilajit products and found thallium in five of them. If your resin came off a market stall with no paperwork, when it starts working is the wrong thing to be worrying about.
Ours came with paperwork. Batch 250915 went to Qarshi Research International, an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited lab and ILAC member, between 28 November and 8 December 2025. Lead, arsenic, mercury and cadmium all came back not detected by AOAC 999.10/11. Fulvic acid measured 35 g/100g by titration and solubility in water 97.2 g/100g by gravimetric method. We could put a “results in 30 days” badge on the packaging tomorrow. It would probably shift more units. It would also be invented, and this business exists because we got tired of invented things being printed on shilajit labels.
So we don’t give a date. We tell you the dose, we publish the batch test, and we leave it to you to decide what you notice and when. If that’s less satisfying than a promise, fair enough. It’s the only version of this we can defend with a document.
A pea-sized dose is roughly 0.4 g, which makes the 15 g jar at R500 last about 37 days and the 40 g jar at R999 last about 100 days. That’s a useful coincidence. Thirty-seven days takes you past the 28 days of the shortest pilot, and 100 days takes you past the 90 days used by both Pandit and Biswas. Per gram it works out at R33 for the small jar and R25 for the large one, which puts the 40 g mid-market in South Africa despite the sticker price.
The 15 g is the worse buy on that arithmetic, and we’ll say so. It’s still the one we’d hand a first-time buyer, because R500 is a cheaper way to find out shilajit does nothing for you.
But none of that means you’ll match a trial result. It means that if you want to give the stuff a run comparable in length to the published research, the jar sizes make the arithmetic easy.
Three things worth checking before you write shilajit off.
And if all three check out and two or three months in you still notice nothing, stop taking it. Genuinely, stop. Shilajit doesn’t do something noticeable for everybody, and there’s no version of our business that gets better because you bought a fourth jar out of stubbornness.
Probably not, and no trial has looked. The shortest published study ran 28 days and measured its participants at the end of it, so anything you read about day one is somebody’s anecdote rather than data.
There’s no head-to-head trial comparing them, so nobody can answer that with evidence. Most of the positive research used a standardised extract in capsules, while resin is the traditional form and the easier one to judge by eye. Gummies are the weak one of the three. You can’t judge a gummy by looking at it, so you’re left trusting whatever the label says. We go through the three formats in our piece on resin versus capsules versus gummies.
No evidence says so. The trials settled on 500 mg a day and stayed there for weeks or months, and doubling up mostly just empties your jar in half the time.
About 37 days for the 15 g and about 100 days for the 40 g, at one pea-sized dose daily. Both ship free anywhere in South Africa, tracked, in one to three working days.
